We are bombarded on a daily basis with stories of crime, fanaticism, war, death and danger. This course will seek to identify a persistent logic of fear and offer both a critique of that logic and a response to it. This course will seek to explore some rather complex themes through close readings of a variety of texts. Given that some of these readings are unorthodox, it is critical that each week"s required reading assignments be done before class begins. Students should be ready to discuss the material in class. A number of classes also include recommended readings. These are optional and will serve to facilitate a more thorough understanding of the topic at hand. They may or may not be discussed in the lecture for that week.
