Official positions that are created in order to hold the government to account. The legislation that creates this role has set up an office that is responsible for auditing the government"s books. Auditor general"s office is large, many accountants. Auditor general is usually hired because they have a high level of experience in accounting and have experience monitoring corporate/government accounts. Responsible for looking in detail at the way the government spends money according to the law. Responsible for making sure that money is not used inappropriately e. g. bribes, election rigging. Responsible for looking at value for money examine whether the money has been efficiently spent. Auditor general"s report is very important -> open, clear and detailed document for the public to view. Gives the report to the public accounts committee. Anywhere in government must provide information to the auditor general"s office.
