PHRM 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Iron-Deficiency Anemia, Ferritin, Hemoglobinopathy
Document Summary
Normal ranges for hgb and hct and causes of anemia vary with age, sex, race. Threshold for defining anemia: hgb or hct 2. 5th percentile for age, race, and sex. Pathologic anemia: blood loss, immune hemolytic disease , congenital infection, twin-twin transfusion syndrome, congenital hemolytic anemia. Full term infants have iron stores to last up until 6 months of age. Growth & lack of adequate intake (greatest risk < 2 years old) Medical conditions (medications that interfere with iron absorption, malabsorption, blood loss) Hgb < 2. 5 percentile for age, sex, race. Serum ferritin : < 12 ug/l (6 m 5 yr); < 15 ug/l (> 5 yr) 9-12 months, 6 months later, annually from 2-5 years. Behavioural disturbances: motor activity, social interaction, attention to tasks. If exclusively breastfeed, add 1 mg/kg iron supplement at 4 months until eating 2 servings of iron rich food per day.
