PHAR 460 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Oxidative Stress, Headache, T Cell
Document Summary
Cold/flu nhps: discuss the evidence supporting nhps in the treatment and prevention of colds and flu. Botany: purpurea, e. angustifolia = most seen. Expressed juice of e. purpurea flowering plants = most studied. Parts used = roots, aerial parts, whole plant. Ketoalkenes: 4% phenolic compounds (caffeic acid derivatives), 4% echinacosides. Macrophage proliferation and phagocytosis; activity t lymphocytes. Results: odds of developing a cold by 58% and duration of cold by 1. 4 days. Echinaguard or echinacin = same preparation = fresh pressed juice of e. purpurea in 22% alcohol: decreased odds of developing the cold by 56% One study found 86% reduction in cold incidence (echinacea + vitamin c + propolis x 12 weeks) Limitations: problems with pooling data (variable species and combo products) One study used angustifolia = no clinically significan effects this is the same spp as flu shield! Prevention: no difference between placebo and echinacea, no difference in adverse events.
