PHAR 460 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Horsepower, Dosage Form, Dicalcium Phosphate
Document Summary
Powdered extract solid extracts = majority of products. Freshly harvested plants are pressed to release their juice. Advantage: the entire part of the plant is used with nothing left behind. Solvents are used to make the extracts usually 30-70% ethanol in water mixture. Extraction solvent is chosen for its chemical properties it will selectively extract components in the plant that match those chemical properties. Plant material is repeatedly rinsed with the solvent until all intended constituents/ chemical marker compunds have been extracted. Produces an extract having a concentrated amount of chemical marker compound(s) that can be used in a lower unit dose to get intended benefit. Start with 2g dried herb end with 1 ml extract = 2:1 ratio (or 1:1, 1:2, 1:3) Usually 5-10x more potent than a tincture. Start with 1g dried herb end with 5 ml extract = 1:5 ratio (or 1:10) Weaker ratio less potent than extracts.
