Document Summary

Occurs when people who have no common lang are thrown together and invent a new lang that uses lexical items from one/more of the contact langs. Most are structurally simple but if used over many gens they evolve. Children born into a comm where a pidgin lang is the common means of comm, acq that pidgin as their native. When children learn a pidgin they add to it, creating a new lang that is grammatically more complex. A creole is a lang that was once a pidgin but became a native lang for some people. Shared features of independently arising creoles suggest that human mind tends to construct only certain kinds of lang. Govt opened schools for deaf and initially the kids had no shared lang. Once these kids were in daily contact with one another, nsl began to develop. Diffs in structural complexity appeared primarily in signing of those who began to learn the lang at an early age.
