Hoh persons themselves may not identify as being hard of hearing because they do not want to be stigmatized and considered different from hearing persons. Not a sense of being part of a hard of hearing community. Don"t fit the hearing paradigm and on the other hand, not deaf. Low level of personal control over events. Lead to frustration or disappointment and resignation. Existence of other factors (language of dominant culture not primary, social class, ethnicity, gender. Conversational lag is experienced because of a delay in hearing. Conversational lag is experienced because of a delay in hearing: to process sound and to fill in missing gaps. Conversational participation is exacerbated by timing challenges in figuring out when the other communication partners have had their say. Social situations can be challenging because often conversations and multiple and overlapping. Hoh persons make academic choices based on their hearing loss.
