The empirical rule is 3 simple statements: approx. 68% of the data will lie between -1 and +1 standard deviations from the mean: approx. 95% of the data will lie between -2 and +2 standard deviations from the mean: approx. 99. 7% (almost all) of the data will lie between -3 and +3 standard deviations from the mean.
