KIN 284 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Alpha-Fetoprotein, Prenatal Development, Placenta Praevia
Document Summary
Topic 3: define the germinal, embryonic, and fetal periods of development. Germinal (0-2 weeks): most vulnerable time of pregnancy. Embryonic (2-8 weeks): cns development, human form takes shape, internal organs begin to develop. Fetal (8-36 weeks): longest period, encompasses all three trimesters, embryo has become recognisable: differentiate between conceptional and gestational age and apply these concepts. Conceptional age: based on the time at which the egg was fertilized. Gestational age: the first day of the mother"s last menstrual period (typically 2 weeks prior to conceptional age) more common. Both expressed as completed weeks: explain the differences between size at birth (sga, aga, lga and low birth weight), risk factors for these, and potential long-term consequences. Sga causes: intrauterine impoverishment (malnutrition, drugs, alcohol etc. ) Lga risk factors: type ii diabetes, gestational diabetes, maternal weight. Lga potential impairments: birth injuries more common: understand and explain common maternal factors on prenatal development: age, weight gain, stress, genetics, nutrition, physical activity.
