Marx argued social stratification was determined by economic resources: 3 factors. Prestige (social status: status group = professional, ethnic, or religious groups. Hierarchy, different groups get different levels of prestige: doctors argued to be highest (neurologists, etc, chiropractors, homeopaths, kinesiologists, etc. lowest, medical dominance. Comprise only 12% of total health care professionals in workforce in canada. Drivers of health care policy in decision making: 1968-69 - 85% men, 1995 - 49% men, 2014 - 44% men, medicine and nursing. Nurses come from religious order who would care for the poor or sick. Military organizations had nurses on battle field. Florence nightingale: social reformer, founder of modern nursing, opened first school of nursing in. Opposed to women"s movement that women should be subservient. Modern nursing in canada: training school for nurses in 1874 in ontario. Hands on care, physicians carry out their orders.
