Document Summary

Main purpose = to prevent war, settle international disputes via arbiters and judicial mandates. > (cid:498)[they] will be deemed to have committed an act of war against all other members the league or not. (cid:499) This is the legal ground for blaming germany & it(cid:495)s allies as fully responsible for. Article (cid:884)(cid:884)/(cid:884)(cid:885): countries that are (cid:494)not yet able(cid:495) to join the international world on starting the first world war. Article 21: added in by the us to protect their own interests (monroe doctrine) their own will survive as mandates from allied powers (uk/france) > article 16 would clearly frustrate the germans, because it blames them and their allies for starting the war & places the entire burden of debt on them. Had the league of nations existed before 1914, this article would have been much more fair. > article 21 seems arbitrary, only benefits the person writing the covenant (us)
