Document Summary

How and why kenya was envisioned as a white settler colony . The issue of majority rule vs power sharing. 2 different kinds of colony in africa: those where there were large numbers of white settlers, and those where there were limited, if not no numbers of settlers. Idea was to groom a moderate set of national leaders, in which power could be transferred peacefully, and in a way that would protect and preserve british interest after independence. This was the overall british strategy to relinquish colonial rule. Difficult to independentalize colonies with large amounts of white settler populations; either b/c settlers were opposed to self-governance or independence, or because they wanted the government to be handed to them, and them only. This gave the rise to the concept of multiracial power-sharing, or, a multiracial constitution, as a means of granting self-government, and perhaps independence, while preserving the dominant political position of the white settlers.
