Document Summary

No human societies regard all human beings as equal. Premised on the idea that some people rank/stand higher than other people. Ranking is based sometimes on personal qualities, but most of the time based on identity. People make choices with regard to other people"s assumed categories. Males have historically been regarded as superior to females. Males often exercised power over females simply because society gave males a certain status females didn"t have. Does not mean all males have power over all females. Husband, wife and servant- husband can exercise power over the wife, but a male servant cannot. She was the most powerful person in england. They did not believe women should hold supreme power, but they were an exception because the line of succession gave them a chance at power. All the people in their councils were men. An example of how family counted more than gender in societies where gender was usually more important.
