Document Summary
Within the arctic circle, air temperatures below 0 (as an average temperature), sub-arctic. Boundary below the arctic circle is at 60 degrees latitude. Southern end of the territories includes a lot of borealis forests --> a lot of the sub-arctic is included within this distance (between the 60th parallel and the tree line) Every 50 years there is an international polar year --> focus on the. Red line --> 10 degree mean temperature (the mean isotherm), also indicates the tree line. Permafrost: temperature that remains below 0 for at least 2 years, causes frosting in the ground. Continuous permafrost decreases as it goes downwards, due to heated earth (this is constant) --> this means that the surface will be very cold but then it will heat up underneath. However, permafrost is a little complicated in the arctic, as there are some places with no permafrost.
