Document Summary
1950s: canadian government colonized the inuit by several institutions (e. g. department of northern affairs/natural resources, hudson"s bay. Company - as governed through trade and the rcmp - as colonial justice) Inuit people were also increasingly viewed as physical bearers of. Their physical presence in the north shored up canada"s claim to sovereignty over the canadian arctic. Rcmp --> one of the major institutions that attempted to control inuit. They monitored the inuit people (e. g. via census information and statistics) Were responsible for relieving starvation, soothing illness and saving lives. Charged with enforcing the law, investigating and adjudicating complaints, collecting duties and liquor permits from traders, monitoring and controlling animals. Often used coercion and intimidation in dealing with the inuit. Although it is critical to note that the inuit did feel some sort of admiration to the rcmp --> as they provided for the people and nurtured them. Often viewed inuit people as childlike and primitive.
