Document Summary
Bog: a wetland with accumulated dead organic material - peat. Dominated by layers of peat mosses which holds water like a sponge. Provides an important range of ecosystem services --> e. g. carbon sequestration, hydrological reservoir (e. g. suppressing floods as an absorption component, filtering water), a habitat for unique biodiversity. Also provides a range of cultural ecosystem services --> i. e. aesthetically pleasant scenery, physiological benefits, emotional/spiritual benefits. Burns bog (delta, bc): 20 kilometers squared, fed by atmospheric moisture (rain, snow) Was severely disturbed by ecological impacts (e. g. environmental influence) In 2004, the remaining bog was purchased by the federal and provincial government (a very large portion) to promote ecological recovery through restoration and rewetting. A lot of the bog is privately owned by a family --> these privately owned areas are areas in which private investors want to develop (thus it is a trade off, in which certain. Indicates a large amount of land use variation in the bog.
