GEOG 311 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Waste Heat, Sea Level Rise, Soil Biology
Document Summary
Consists of the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, pedo and lithosphere, and the built system (get the diagram from lecture slides) Pedo-lithosphere: all the existing building structures are built on and in. Characteristics of the ground is important when we are building (engineering geology) --> leads to better planning. Also provides clean water, for organisms that utilize this as a main resource (e. g. as a nutrient) Shows the natural hazards, assess the risks and vulnerability to events (e. g. flooding, subsidence, permafrost thawing, landslides, volcanic activity, earthquakes, erosion) Avoid coast lines that are subject to submergence --> e. g. places with erosion floods. Rivers, floodplains, alluvial fans --> subject to disasters if the river isn"t well controlled. Swamps/bogs --> keeping away from wetlands (however some wetlands are drained and built on - they are essentially reconstructed) Subsiding land, abandoned mining areas (e. g. coal mines) Karst and post-glacial kettle holds/permafrost --> cold and glaciated areas.
