GEOG 310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 26: Keystone Species, Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research
Document Summary
Salmon comes back to the river they were born in (by moving up the river) They lay their eggs, with the eggs growing in stream and ultimately becoming fingerlings. Once they mature, they go back to the stream they were born. Different types of salmon have different life expectancies and maturity levels. They also have different types of ocean ranges --> they go to different types of feeding grounds (and varies with seasons) Salmon exists across multiple eezs (in bc, canada/us) --> this means there are a lot of geogrpahical area you have to manage to ensure a healthy population of salmon, thus difficult to manage. Also involves different communities that are affected by these species. Mortality rates of salmon are incredibly low (5% survival rate) --> leads to competition between different types of salmon. They have different trophic levels since they are always moving.
