GEOG 310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Species Richness, Biogeography, Move
Document Summary
Designing parks and protected areas (lesson from biogeography) ii. You would most likely to pick design 3 --> because you are less. Edge effects: the transition from one ecosystem to another ecosystem, at this point of transition the conditions change (e. g. if you move from the forest edge to an exposed environment, this would lead to changes in species richness) Impacts species richness, reduce the quality of patches. I. e. if you have a more exposed environment with solar radiation + higher temperatures, there would be more invasive species --> these may be due to wild fire. To counter this, you may introduce secondary succession of native plants to help mitigate edge effects. If the surrounding environment is continually disturbed, the area exposed to edge effects would eventually increase in size --> i. e. a retreat of the habitat in the exposed edges. Thus it is important to manage the edge effects (i. e. the retreat of the species/habitats) to maintain forests.
