GEOG 310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Sea Louse, Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research, Plecoptera
Document Summary
40% of the world species (fish + vertebrates) live in freshwater environments. Although freshwater only makes up a small percentage of the earth, they are incredibly important. This is because the nature of freshwater habitats. Linear flow systems in rivers --> tend to be different in upper and lower reaches, also have natural and un-natural flows. Fragmentation + linear systems lead to more diverse. These species most likely have the same traits (as they are evolving in the same environment) --> thus there is not a huge amount of heterogeneity. Water resource development --> how we manage resources end up impacting the water (e. g. dams) Pollution --> things that have been added to the water and contaminated it (i. e. sediments, nitrogen, phosphorous loading) Biotic factors --> species invasion and exploitation pressures (i. e. trade --> greater global trade routes would carry aquatic species to different regions, or when people move from place to place)
