Document Summary

Census developed in the 18th c: define population size of political units, constant assessment of the population, for election to reflect the population, old census. Have an idea of eligible people to fight. Geographies of boom and bust: we live in extraordinary times, 31. 10. 2011, the world"s population hit 7 billion, having reached 6 billion only 12 years earlier, billion people in just 12 years. Such rates of growth are not sustainable: high rates of growth aren"t sustainable, at mid-1970"s growth, we enter the world of science fiction, with the world population doubling, every 35 years. It would grow x 1,000,000 every 700 years: in less than 1200 year(assume continuing rate of growth at 1970s) The weight of every person in the world would exceed the weight of the world: population crisis was a paramount global conen of the 1970"s just as the environmental crisis/global warming is today.
