GEOG 122 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Biculturalism, Canadian Confederation, Essentialism
Document Summary
Lecture 18: multicultural societies: cultural diversity in the global north. The extent of cultural diversity from immigration in the global north, especially in large cities. Does it impede national cohesion by airming cultural diference. When business was booming in places, governments would allow more immigrants so they could work. Family class/reuniication: family members in canada sponsor their family members in other countries to help them come to. Economic sector: skilled workers who come to canada. There is a redistribution in these categories, the share of economic sectors have grown and family/refugees has declines. That is the way the policy/acceptances have turned out, not a change in application. The current federal government is trying to change this (growing) trend, and as a result refugees will have more spots to come to canada, as well as families. Immigration numbers will go up for family/refugees and will go down for economic people. Before that europe has the largest share of immigrants.
