Protein containing foods can be divided into two categories: Contains all the indispensable aa in the amounts needed by human. Animal sources: milk, yogurt, cheese, eggs, meat, fish and poultry. Incomplete protein: have too little of one or more indispensable aa. Plant sources: legumes, nuts, seeds, vegetables, and cereals/grains. The exceptions: soy protein, quinoa and chia seeds which are complete proteins. Definition= indispensable aa that is present in the lowest quantity in the food. May reduce body"s ability to synthesize its own body proteins. Body cannot make a protein if an aa is missing. Certain protein-containing foods can be ingested together or combined their aa pattern become complementary. Complementary food should be consumed at the same meal. (legumes: limiting= sulfur-containing aa) + (grains: limiting= lysine. The lacto-ova vegetarian should have no problem with protein adequacy. Exception: milk + legumes still fails to met standard pattern for sulfur- containing amino acids.
