EOSC 116 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Arthropod, Trilobite, Trace Fossil
Document Summary
Eosc 116 (jan. 4th) basic intro into plate tectonics. Convergent: continent and continent: can"t get forced below one another; rises instead. Ocean to ocean (jan. 6th) intro concepts. Rocks are aggregates of minerals (minerals are the base unit of geology: mineral: naturally occurring crystalline inorganic, can be very variable in color, minerals can be rock forming. Metamorphic rocks: heat and pressure cause new rocks to form, equilibrium. Form from the erosion/breaking up/ transport and deposition of preexisting rocks. Composed of grains not crystals (mostly quartz) At first stage, can see the clumps . Soft sediments are transformed into rock by various processes called diagensis (also called lithification) Pores (gaps btwn grains) are reduced by compaction. Fluids precipitate minerals (eg calcite and quartz) btwn the grains = cement: biochemical sedimentary rocks: Form from the precipitation of material produced by organisms. Ie limestones and chalk (calcium carbonate: chemical sedimentary rocks (least common)
