The butt of the joke should always be someone or something or higher standing (social, economic) than the joke-teller. Use jokes to subvert stereotypes, not support them. Elements of any comedy writing - incongruity, tension: the build up, surprise, status reversal, irony. Parody: is an imitation, of form or content, that pokes fun at form or content. Satire: parody in the service of change comedy with a specific societal drive behind it. 2 elements seen in comics: pacing: where the joke partly rests in how long it takes the to respond. Dramatic comedies (dramadies): comedy and drama is more equally balanced. Ya audience generally reads protagonists that are 2 years older than them. Close 1st person pov - creates empathy and immediacy. Ya novels are more action driven than adult fiction the character must do things. Think about what you wanted to read as a teenager. Relationships, sex, drugs, crime, isolation, depression, suicide, body image, self discovery, bullying .
