They serve as familiar patterns for audiences to establish story expectations (expectations e. g. the heroes are expected to succeed) Examples: hero, villain, queen, virgin, quest, good vs evil. To make a good character, they would have contrasting archetypes (e. g. prostitute and mother) Beat: a unit of text, dialogue, or behavior that moves the story forward (e. g. brad: What are you doing here? , monica: you know quite well what i"m doing here. this is a beat that signifies what is happening), it can also be classified as a measurement to measure the transaction of the story. Obstacle: what stands in the way of achieving the objective (brad"s obstacle: monica is stopping him, monica"s obstacle: brad"s dishonesty)
