CONS 127 Lecture 14: CONS 127 - Oceans from Space March 15 2018
Document Summary
Cryosphere is the frozen water portion of the earth"s surface. Time is the key (how long does it take from one component to transition to the next?) Glacier: frozen water that is contantly in motion. Sea ice: frozen fresh or salt water i. e. great lakes, iceberg. More impurities in snow, less reflectance of snow i. e. glacier is lower on the curve as it is dirtier/darker than fresh snow. Today, we will focus on how we can use earth observation to gather information about our oceans. Go by sea to take samples i. e. boats, nets, other instruments to collect information with. Collect information under any sea conditions (stormy seas etc) We are able to build better understanding of our oceans. To map the ocean around tasmania would take 10 years. A satellite would take much quicker than 10 years! In fact, a satellite took 1 minute to cover the entire area!
