COGS 200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Cognitive Neuroscience, Cognitive Neuropsychology, Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy
Document Summary
Cognitive psychology: the study of human thought / the way in which the brain processes information. Introspection (wilhelm wundt): deliberately observing one"s own mental processes. Problems(oswald k lpe, edward titchener): there were lots of things going on unconsciously that created bias. Behaviorism(john watson, b. f. skinner): a learning theory that only focuses on objectively observable behaviors and discounts any independent activities of the mind. A review of b. f. skinner"s verbal behavior, 1959. Experimental cognitive psychology: the scientific testing of psychological processes in human and animal subjects. Experimental methodology: controlled studies as a window into cognition. Dependent variable: variable that is affected/dependent on the independent variable. Behavioral experimental approach: examine behavioral performance in a laboratory study to understand the underlying mental process. Objective measure, scientifically testable and replicable, participant do not need awareness. Behaviour: indirect measure of the mental process. Not all behaviours appropriate for all populations. Cognitive neuroscience: understanding the brain is crucial to understanding the mind.
