Games were important for people to actually see the emperors, and see them up close . Important, then, for them to gage importance etc. Panem et circenses - already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the people have abdicated our duties; for the people who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office****** Imperial sponsorship: under the empire the role of the games was to promote the rule of the emperors. Emperors competed w/ their predecessors to throw more lavish games (sound familiar?) Imperial monopoly means that, no matter what, the emperor always had the final word. No matter what the popularity amongst the people a senator had, it was always the emperor"s decision in the end. Emperors found all sorts of excuses to put on games. When he got better, he put on games to. 3 places where people had outlet to voice opinions!
