Pronunciation (refer to audio books for best pronunciation) Chinese has four tones that are used in the pin yin written language. The tones are place on top of vowels depending, which specify how to pronounce the word as different pronunciations lead to different meanings. There is the possibility of not having a tone; silent. Finals are the second part to a pin yin word. There are 6 finals that can be combined. The order of the vowels is very important. a o e i u. Rule: if two vowels are present on the final of a word. The tone is placed on the first vowel according to the list above. Exception: iu " combination in a word doesn"t follow the rule. There are 6 sets of initials with are combined with finals to make up the pin yin words. These initials are pronounced different from those in english. Make sure to look up how to pronounce them.
