CAPS 391 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Anterior Grey Column, Posterior Grey Column, Cerebral Peduncle
Document Summary
Central nervous system: pathways occur on both sides, diagram only shows one for simplicity. Dorsal spinocerebellar: proprioception (unconscious), does not relay to the cerebral cortex, only 2 neurons. First- order neuron is in the drg. Its axon synapses with the second- order neuron in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. The axon of the third- order neuron relays the sensory information to the sensory cortex. Pyramidal: voluntary movements, start from the cerebral (motor) cortex and goes to the anterior horn. At the caudal medulla: anterior/ventral corticospinal: 20- 25% of corticospinal fibres do not cross the midline at the medulla. The axon continues to descend in the anterior column of the spinal cord in the ipsilateral side. Injury to the upper motor neuron spastic paralysis of muscles. Injury to lower motor neuron flacid paralysis (no tone) of the muscles. Brainstem: review notes for location of cranial nerves (cniii- cnxii arise from brainstem).
