CAPS 390 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Integral Membrane Protein, Lipid Bilayer, Protein Kinase A
Document Summary
Lecture 02 summary, sept 08/17 (dr. chris loewen) Cell biology i; readings: ch 2; pp 13-35. Golgi controversy was not covered in today"s class please read up on it (section on alternative. Cells are the basic fundamental units of structure and function in living organisms. Cells are surrounded by membranes and include various organelles (see fig 2. 5 and fig 2. 6 in the text). Please note: there is a link to the "inner life of the cell" videos on the "useful links" page of the course website for those interested. Membranes & phospholipids: the membrane is a lipid bilayer of phospholipids, which are "amphipathic". Phosphatidylcholine (pc) is the major membrane phospholipids which consists of: Hydrophilic (water-liking; polar head group): choline, phosphate, glycerol; Hydrophobic (water-repelling; likes to be with other hydrophobic structures): the fatty acids: under a transmission electron microscope (tem), cell membranes are "trilaminar" in appearance, even though they are actually a molecular "bilayer" (ie. 2 layers of phospholipids)
