Document Summary

Biol 230 field lab 2 - mark-recapture analysis. We will estimate the size of the isopod population in the sampled area of totem field using mark- recapture methods. At any point in time, not all isopods will be found under the logs - some will be foraging away from the logs or will escape detection. With mark-capture methods we can estimate the full population. Then, when we revisit this site on day t, and catch ct individuals some of them will be marked (let"s call these rt) and some will be unmarked (call these ut). The proportion of marked individuals in our sample will be rt/ct. Since the sample of individuals we caught is hopefully a random sample of the full population, the proportion of marked individuals should be the same in both, that is: Ct solving for nt gives us nt = (ct *mt)/ rt which now lets us estimate nt from known ct, mt, rt.
