Document Summary

Meta-analysis: analyzing the data of a variety of other studies that address a similar question. Meta-analysis of seed addition studies: effect size = species richness when seeds are added species richness when no seeds are added (scaled by variance, effect size > 0 means dispersal limitation of species richness. Neutral process: process that does not require species to be different from each other in any way: cannot predict which species will occur, only the number of species. Niche process: depends on species being different: differ in requirements for resources or tolerances of environmental conditions. Niche concept: a set of environmental/organism conditions, a set of biotic interactions. Habitat filtering niche models helps predict where species can survive after climate change: however, doesn"t explain all of species" distribution. Fundamental niche: set of conditions under which we would predict a distribution of abundances. Realized niche: actual distribution of abundances that differs from the fundamental niche due to biotic conditions.
