Document Summary

Ability of region to support species depends on current conditions. Such hypotheses are on ecological rather than evolutionary timescales. Number of species the region can support in terms of: Tropics have more solar energy for more of year than higher latitudes. Primary productivity limited by temperature, precipitation, and nutrient availability. More productive regions have more species (in the tropics) Evapotranspiration = sum of evaporation and transpiration from plants. Productive regions: support more individuals, have rare resources, higher population growth (recover from disturbance, higher speciation rates. If more productive regions (tropics) have more individuals. And if species requires a certain population size to persist over time. Such that the number of species is limited by the number of individuals. Then regions with fewer individuals should have fewer species. High latitude = low productivity (-) [temperature) High abundance = more species supported (+) Beta diversity: difference in species composition between local sites in a region.
