Document Summary

Do we need biological explanations? (null models) Is the pattern real? (statistics) p values. Ignore traits: sampling effect - a pattern occurs because rare species are unlikely to be found in small sample sizes, not because of trait of species. Small bromeliads -> few insects -> low chance of including damselflies -> no damselflies. Define a regional pool of individuals. (thousands of individuals distributed amongst 60 species) recorded at field site. Record total number of individuals found in small and big bromeliads. Randomly fill small and big bromeliads w/ individuals from pool until original abundance reached. Compare predicted frequency from null model to observed frequency: neutral model a pattern occurs because of random variation between individuals in dispersal, birth, and death rates. Traits of species do not determine abundance and distribution. Input flux flow rate into (egg deposited) Stock volume of water (number of larvae) Output flux flow rate out of (death, or winged adult)
