BIOL 200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Parasitism, Herbivore, Eugenius Warming
Document Summary
Herbivore eats the tissue or internal fluids of living plants or algae. Predator kills and eats other organisms, referred to as prey. Parasite li(cid:448)es i(cid:374) or o(cid:374) a(cid:374)other orga(cid:374)is(cid:373) (cid:894)its host(cid:895), feedi(cid:374)g o(cid:374) parts of it. These are k(cid:374)o(cid:449)(cid:374) as top-down interactions, as they involve higher trophic level consuming lower trophic level. Density independent limits population size, no equilibrium. Large number of pine, the beetle reduces pine population. Winter temperatures are density independent factor for beetles, reducing survival when cold, increasing when warm. (independent of beetle density) When prey escape detection by predators at low densities, or when diseases spread rapidly at high host densities. More sick people in bus, more likely to get sick. Abiotic factors often but not always limit. Limit - weather or fire reduces survival or reproduction. Regulation - flammable plant species regulated by fire, as likelihood of fire increases w/ density of flammable plants.
