All organisms are made up of cells. Cell is the fundamental unit of life. There is no life without cells, cell is the smallest unit of life. Can be really small and simple or large and specialized. Examples: skin cells, nerve cells, ostrich egg (one single giant cell) Bacterial cell are significantly smaller than eukaryotic cells. They can have different sizes and shapes but contain a stable blueprint information in molecular form: A discrete boundary that separates the inside from the outside (cell wall) Ability to harness materials and energy from the environment. Three important factors that are limitations for large cells: Sa to volume ratio: larger sa-- more molecule x taken up. Diffusion: all molecules diffuse at the same rate-- greater sa and volume, it will take longer. Dilution: in larger volume, molecule x will dilute as it diffuses within the cell. The larger the cell, the less sa per volume.
