Document Summary

There are individual men and women and there are families thatcher: this is missing ethnicity, institutions and structures. Because we want to apply theories to it. It uses specific research methods to do it. We need people, rules, culture language, norms, institutions. Multiculturalism, bilingualism, access to universal health care, maple leafs, poutine, hockey, etc. It is collective because we all believe that: you cannot directly see it but you feel its power and influence. Eg. we are all here because we think getting an education is important. We are individuals and we make choices but those choices are not entirely free and they are shaped by all the institutions we interact with and the larger context of society. Emilie durkheim- suicide: he studied suicide rates. Looking at rates by different countries by gender you see men are much more likely to die from suicide than women: kuwait has super low death by suicide.
