Hatamoto or shinpan (direct retainers or bannermen or relative with right of audience with the shogun the shinpan trace descent to ieyasu) Fudai (affiliate daimyo they staff the bakufu): ieyasu"s allies at sekigahara (treasures among men) (staffers of the bakufu) Tozama (independent or outer daimyo) their lands are furthest from edo and sharply reduced owing to their opposition to ieyasu at sekigahara.
