Political capital (bakufu) moved to edo (today"s tokyo) Grows from a sleepy fishing village to a city of a million in 100 years. 1603 ieyasu takes and redefines the title of seii taish gun. Title had been vacant for thirty years. 1605 ieyasu passes title of shogun to his son, remains behind scene for 11 years until 1616, hidetada (d. 1632) while controlling matters himself for another ten years. Immediate allocation of domains to daimyo according to their role in the battle of sekigahara. Hatamoto or shinpan (direct retainers or bannermen or relative with right of audience with the shogun the shinpan trace descent to ieyasu) Fudai (affiliate daimyo they staff the bakufu): ieyasu"s allies at sekigahara (treasures among men) (staffers of the bakufu) Tozama (independent or outer daimyo) their lands are furthest from edo and sharply reduced owing to their opposition to ieyasu at sekigahara.
