The german excavation team was able to define the floorplan and stratigraphy of the building phases through time. The temple of ishtar were excavated several levels/phases below to define the phases. Suchgraben are test trenches that were dug at regular intervals across the face of the settlement. The trenches were dug to look at domestic sense of daily life. Gertrude bell visited assur in 1909 and 1911 and took very nice wide photographs of the site. Altar had bricks set in the door (meaning the room was out of service) found inside the room were pedestales, and are probably de-commissioned. One of them scholars believed to be dedicated to the god of flame (nusku) given the image (the carved image on the stone)
