Genus, species, homo sapiens (h. sapiens) - underlined or italicized. Animalia and vegetabilia, protista (eukaryotic group) - kingdom of primitive form. Modern day kingdoms: bacteria, protozoa, chromista, plantae, fungi, animalia. Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species. King phillip came over for green soup. Animals - multicellular eukaryotic organism that is motile and heterotrophic. Heterotroph - cannot make its own food, unlike autotrophs. Phylum chordata - notochord, dorsal neural tube, pharyngeal slits (we do not have slits, just pouches), postanal tail, endostyle (gathers food and sends it to the esophagus). Taxonomy - a hierarchy of categories that classify all living things based on physical characteristics that indicate evolutionary descent. Systematics - scientific names for all organisms, describes them, preserves collections of them, provides classifications for organisms, keys for their id, data on distributions, investigates evolutionary history, considers environmental adaptation. Homologies - similarity in traits result from descent from a common ancestor.
