Document Summary

Anthropology is really about the practice of story-telling. What is settler colonialism? (key point in the book) Settler colonialism is defined by a territorial project-the accumulation of land. Transforming the land to make it usable for one"s own interests. These complex narratives heavily favor the colonialists, and influence them as well. Empty land became a social structure, a framework that supported the invasiveness settler colonial society by erasing or obscuring. Settler colonialism is not over, which is the premise behind the idea of "indigenous people" The very need to claim an indigenous identity is a result of losing land. The idea itself of indigeneity shouldn"t be mentioned, and it only is because it"s being challenged. The notion of recognition on the part of a state is a problem. Although political recognition is a technique of settler governance, it appears as a transcendent and universal human desire that becomes a political antidote to historical wrongdoing.
