Types of religious function/desire: cognitive ( i want an explanation for the world , substantive ( when i practice ritual it does not rain , expressive ( i want what i cannot have, religion helps me satisfy desire ) Concept of religion as distinct institutional form required for linking it with identity, boundaries are created between individual explanatory systems. World religions: buddhism, bahia, christianity, confucianism, hinduism, islam, jainism, judaism, shinto, sikhism, taoism, zoroastrianism. Other traditions: ancestor worship, animism, paganism, shamanism.
