The entire thing behind discontinuity editing was opposite to continuity editing in hollywood (flowing nicely) discontinuity tried to switch that. Making the edit the most important part of film. This can be done in a few different ways, it can be used in musical numbers, dream sequences, or comedies (repeated actions) or in horror. Jump cuts, bit disorientating, breaks a single take. Take goes on longer but cut in the middle. Film breathless (we"re watching later) it"s entirely jump cuts narratives had a main character not the journey, but change of collective. This approach is called typage; a character"s appearance or behaviour is supposed to represent their social class. Like in mean girls you know where everyone belongs. Eisenstein rather than continuity editing focused on conflict editing. He was a filmmaker and theorist writing a lot about this. Graphic conflict: ex: steps going one-way character going the other, lines one way, eye gaze another.
