Document Summary
All communication (with the arguable exception of intrapersonal communication) involves a minimum of two participants. One focus of this class: yourself as a participant in the communication process: an active member of several cultures which have shaped your experience and point of view (ethnic, geographical, professional, family, etc. ) Every communication act has a purpose or at least an effect: to relate, to influence, to play, to exchange information, to understand, to develop relationships, to represent ourselves, potentially, to deceive. All relationships involve power the ability to influence others. We communicate both task and relational messages. Interpersonal communication is a process (of adjustment and transaction, an ongoing process). Interpersonal communication is potent; it is inevitable, irreversible, and unrepeatable. Interpersonal communication services a variety of purposes: to learn, relate, influence, play, etc. The context (or environment) of communication is the situation in which communication takes place. It permeates every communication act: physical (for example, sitting with another person in a caf )
