SOC327 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Police Use Of Firearms In The United Kingdom, Totalitarianism, Publicis
Document Summary
Module 12: policing protest movements: an overview of the policing of protest movements. This lecture is going to deal with the policing of protest movements and also the policing of crowd behaviour. Historically the police replaced the military as the principle agency responsible for safeguarding internal security and public order, military actions historically have typically mean very repressive, confrontational and very often deadly. Now historically it is not always been that way, the police are often repressive when it comes to political protest; this is particularly true in utilitarian or authoritarian regimes. They tend to have a lot of history dealing with protests, protesters in a very repressive way. Their role largely was seen as a peacekeeping role rather than a law enforcement role when it came to protest movements: repression vs. Now as dr. desroches mentioned earlier lecture, there"s essentially two ways of dealing with protest from the point of view of the police.
