Principles of policing as outlined in the police services act. Physical labour; undemanding therefore men were recruited. Middle of 20th century demanded interpersonal skills and higher education. Salary raised o: became middle class occupation; previously blue collared jobs. Even blue collared jobs moved up from entry level jobs (used to be from new immigrants) Training narrow and applied focus o o. Specific skills and knowledge that can be applied on the job. Police college; law, disarming someone, how to use weapons, driving at high speeds. Education: required is relatively low gr 12. Realistically difficult to get a job with just gr 12. In practice looking for higher education or life experiences. Able to learn: helpful for officers sensitize them to them to legal or political issues.
