SOC327 Lecture 6: Module 06
Document Summary
Module 06: police patrol work- officer discretion and police powers of arrest (chapter 6) Defining patrol work and characteristics: typically, uniform officers driving around in their cruisers. There is also foot patrol which is officers walking the beat but majority is in cruisers. Idea behind this is that patrol cars have communication systems such as telephones, radios, computer terminals, that allow them to quickly return calls for service. Usually 60-70% of officers in an urban setting will be patrol officers, so when they get into work they belong to a shift/ group. They usually participate in a debriefing and then they"ll get into their cruisers and answer calls. In busy cities, like waterloo there is already a list of calls that are prioritized in their cruisers that they will first attend to when going on shift.
