Socialization: acquisition of knowledge, skills and motivation to participate in social life. Epigenetics: the study of how the environment modifies the way that genes are expressed. Paul shenk: his thesis was that our genes are constantly activated by environmental stimuli. The case of genie: the girl who locked in a room. Social isolation and lack of social control can lead to poor physiological and physical health. Social isolation leads to irreparable developmental damage. Learning/behaviorist frame of reference: says same concepts that apply to humans also apply to animals. Classical conditioning: links a response to a known stimulus. Instrumental or operant conditioning: this focuses attention on the response which is not related to any known stimulus. According to skinner it is the response that correlates with positive reinforcement or a reward. Humans unlike animals have the capacity to share symbolic meaning and symbols in ways that animals cannot. Psychoanalytic frame of reference: developed by sigmund freud and his followers.
